Juniper Networks engages in the design, development, and sale of products and services like IT networking, cloud networking, cyber security, software, and SaaS. Its products address network requirements for global service providers, cloud providers, public sectors, and the government sector. Juniper has offices in 53 countries worldwide, that provide services to more than 30,000 customers worldwide.

This is the case study from the beginning-

 

STEP 1

1.      The company was founded in 1996 by Pradeep Sindhu. Pradeep Sindhu had earned a Ph.D. in computer science from Carnegie Mellon University.

2.      Pradeep Sindhu got a job as a Principal Scientist at Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre. Here he developed design tools for high-speed interconnects for shared-memory multiprocessors.

3.      In 1995 during working in Xerox Palo Alto Research Centre, Pradeep formulated an idea to create a company. He observed the growing need for high-end internet routers.

4.      In 1996 he established the Juniper Networks. In the beginning days, he operated the firm from his home.


STEP 2

5.      He immediately began securing funds and recruiting experienced professionals.

6.      Former founding CEO of Sun Microsystems- Vinod Khosla, invested $200,000 in the formation of the Silicon Vally- based Juniper.      

7.      Pradeep was a technology specialist, and he found that there is no business background.

8.      Soon he hired Scott Kriens as the company’s president and CEO.

9.      Scott Kriens created a workforce capable of providing the speed of market required.

10.   The new routers developed by Juniper were the most powerful and able to transmit a high volume of data.

11.   Juniper used advanced technology, unlike its competitors was using old recycled technology.

12.   Juniper M-Series routers, powered by the internet processors II ASIC and controlled by JUNOS software, enable a truly integrated multiservice IP network for the first time in the market.

13.   The Juniper internet routers did better than any other company and Juniper became the leader in its field.

14.   In 1999 the company generated $103 million in revenue. In just one year this figure jumped more than 550% that’s $674 million. (Source)

15.   In April 2010 the company acquired six companies for its organic growth.

16.   On 21 Feb. 2021 Juniper Networks acquired Brilliant Telecommunication for $4,000,000.

17.   On 14 Feb. 2022 Juniper Networks announced that the company has acquired WiteSand, which is a pioneer of cloud-native zero-trust network access control solutions.

 

JUNIPER AND CISCO-

Juniper’s long-time competition with Cisco to be first in the internet core router market. The competition has been dubbed by some as the Core Wars.

Juniper’s routers were 4 times faster than Cisco’s quickest but required only two-thirds of power consumption. In the first quarter of 2001, there was a battleground between Cisco and Juniper, to win a horse race among the high-speed router vendors.

Is Juniper better than Cisco? – The routers provided by Juniper are generally less expensive than Cisco’s routers. The other parts also have better performance designed with the latest technology and are slightly less expensive than Cisco.
